National inventory and state distribution

The snapshot contains 828 normalized, active, approved locations across 47 states. It excludes 189 raw records that did not qualify after public-directory filtering and canonical deduplication.

Use the riding-location directory to browse individual records or select a state from the comparison below.

Camping availability

128 locations have verified positive camping information among 146 locations with known camping status. The remaining 682 records are unknown—not locations confirmed to prohibit camping.

Coverage is 17.6%, below the 35% headline threshold, so this report does not publish a national camping percentage. Explore the camping directory where available.

Terrain distribution

Terrain diversity means the number of normalized categories represented by verified park records. It is an inventory measure, not a quality score. Categories counted are defined in the methodology.

Vehicle-width and access data

173 locations have known structured width or access information (20.9% coverage). Because this does not meet the headline coverage gate, the report does not infer national narrow-trail or full-size-access percentages.

Acreage and trail mileage

Positive, plausible acreage is available for 611 locations (73.8% coverage). The acreage ranking excludes missing and suspicious values.

Trail mileage is known for only 51 locations (6.2% coverage). The park trail-mile ranking is withheld because coverage does not pass the 10% minimum.

Event distribution

The snapshot contains 219 approved events whose end date was on or after the snapshot date, representing 30 states. Browse current details in the events directory; event schedules can change after this frozen report.

“Coverage” summarizes whether camping, land type, and width/access fields are known; it is not a rating of riding quality.

Methodology

  • Database: SxSWeRide’s normalized canonical public park directory and approved events directory.
  • Qualification: locations must be approved, active, have a valid state and name, and survive the same duplicate resolution used by the public directory.
  • Duplicates: records are grouped by canonical state/slug, identity, website, and location signals; the most complete record represents a group.
  • Unknown: a missing or unverified value is not counted as “No” and is excluded from attribute counts.
  • States: park and event state names/abbreviations are normalized to U.S. state names.
  • Terrain: normalized categories are Trails, Rocks, Mud, Sand, Sand Dunes, Forest / Woods, Hills / Mountains, Desert, Water Crossings, Gravel / Dirt Roads, and Mixed Terrain.
  • Numeric rankings: only positive numeric values within configured plausibility limits are eligible; flagged outliers remain visible to the audit and are excluded.
  • Events: approved events ending on or after 2026-09-21 are current for this snapshot.

Data limitations

  • SxSWeRide continuously adds and verifies locations, while this edition remains frozen.
  • Not every location has complete camping, acreage, trail-mileage, ownership, or width data.
  • Temporary park and event changes may occur after the snapshot.
  • The composite Riding Access Index is deferred because cross-field coverage is not yet sufficient.
